As I’m writing each novel I find certain songs pop into my head. So I don’t lose them I make a playlist. Sometimes I hear something on the radio and I know it fits with the story and certain songs match to different scenes in the novel. I am lucky in that I can picture whole scenes in my mind so it’s just like watching a film but one that only I can see. As I can imagine it as a film having a soundtrack makes perfect sense to me. It will also come in very handy if the wonderful Richard Curtis ever comes knocking (well, an author can dream!) I can just imagine the credits rolling and Place Your Hands by Reef playing.
I know it’s an overused phrase but Meet Me At Pebble Beach really is a rollercoaster of emotions. I like to put my characters through the mill so there are comic moments as well as very sad ones. Life isn’t easy – ordinary people end up in extraordinary situations and that is certainly the case with Regan. I think the different songs on the playlist show the ups and downs of the story as the varying moods are reflected in the music.
Looking at all the songs together I realise they are wildly different and span quite a few years, which probably says a lot about my musical taste! I hope you enjoy them.
